Cheppad Grama Panchayat in Alappuzha district is gaining attention for adopting a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach to waste management. Breaking away from the conventional practice of constructing concrete buildings for Material Collection Facilities (MCF), the panchayat has set up MCF centers by repurposing old shipping containers.

Two such containers have been converted into storage facilities for inorganic waste, enabling the panchayat to store nearly 800 kg of waste every month. The initiative, part of the 2024-25 annual plan, was implemented at a cost of ₹6.48 lakh, using both panchayat funds and the Central Finance Commission grant. The containers, sourced from Integrated Lifters—a container architecture firm—have been installed in Ward 3 near the panchayat and in Ward 11 at Kottukoyikkal junction along the national highway. Each container stands 20 feet high with a storage capacity of 36.31 cubic meters.

The MCF activities also support livelihood generation. Currently, 28 Harithakarmasena members are engaged in collecting and sorting plastic products, bottles, glass, and other inorganic waste from the 14 wards of the panchayat. The segregated waste is then handed over to Clean Kerala Company and Planet Earth Eco Solutions for further processing. By introducing this innovative and sustainable waste management model, Cheppad Panchayat has set an example that can inspire other local self-government bodies across the state.

A remarkable success story is unfolding in Mavelikkara’s Thazhakkara Panchayat in Alappuzha district, where the Kallimel Beekeeping Center, launched in 2018, has grown into a national model of agricultural innovation and farmer empowerment. Established as the country’s first bee botanical garden, the center now boasts a daily turnover of up to ₹25,000, benefiting thousands of farmers across the region.

Spread across three acres under Horticorp, this is the first government-run modern facility for honey production, purification, and marketing. The initiative began by renovating an existing building at a cost of ₹1 crore to raise awareness about the vital role of bees. Since then, further development works worth over ₹2 crore have enhanced the facility in multiple phases.

The center annually produces around two tons of honey, with about 200 beehives housing both Indian and small bees. Honey collected from farmers is purchased at fair prices, then processed and marketed under the brand ‘Amrit Honey’, ensuring quality at affordable rates. Over 50,000 kg of honey has been sold, with one kilogram priced at ₹380 and five kilograms at ₹1,375.

Comprehensive beekeeping training is provided to farmers, and those who complete it successfully receive beehives and related equipment at a 40% subsidy, supported by central and state schemes. So far, over 1,500 farmers have been trained, and more than 10,000 farmers have received subsidized assistance to develop bee colonies.

The center also produces and markets value-added products like honey soap, licorice, true indigo, and different varieties of rice. It has received approval to establish a honey quality testing lab for farmers, with construction expected to start within two months. Plans are in place to transform the facility into a honey museum to promote tourism and educate visitors.

In a unique innovation, fruit-flavored honey has been developed using infusion technology after two decades of research by Horticorp. The required machinery for this process has been developed in-house, positioning the center at the forefront of agri-based product innovation.

The Kallimel Beekeeping Center stands as a shining example of how targeted agricultural development can enhance local economies, empower farmers, and contribute to sustainable livelihoods through honey production.
.

The Idukki district administration has launched the 'Pursuit of Happiness' scheme to support students who have performed well in their Class 10 and Plus Two examinations but are unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints. This project offers these deserving students the opportunity to choose courses of their interest and continue their academic journey without the burden of financial hardship. The core objective is to ensure that no student’s educational aspirations are hindered by lack of funds.

Students in need of assistance can apply through the official website idukki.nic.in. Each application will undergo a thorough eligibility verification process conducted by the respective village officers. Based on their reports, the District Collector will make the final selection of beneficiaries. The scheme follows a transparent and efficient process to ensure that help reaches the most deserving candidates.

Individuals who wish to contribute to this noble cause can also apply via the same website. The district administration will reach out to those who express interest in becoming sponsors. Selected sponsors are required to submit a consent form either directly to the District Collector or through the official email. The coordination between sponsors and students will be managed under the direct supervision of the Collector.

Once a student is matched with a sponsor, the district administration will contact the head of the institution offering the student’s chosen course. Sponsors will then be informed of relevant details, including course fees. A joint bank account will be opened in the names of the Collector, sponsor, head of the institution, and student to ensure full transparency in the disbursal of funds. The sponsorship amount will be transferred through this account, ensuring accountability at every step.

More than just a welfare scheme, 'Pursuit of Happiness' is a mission to spark hope and open doors to a brighter future for students across Idukki.

The award recognises the centre’s efforts in implementing effective biomedical waste management and raising awareness about healthcare-related environmental practices.

Out of 21,792 family health centres across the state, Noolpuzha was ranked second. The recognition was given in the category of hospitals with fewer than 50 beds.

The centre was honoured for its exemplary initiatives, including efficient waste management, vaccination of waste-handling staff, installation of modern equipment for waste disposal, obtaining clearance from the Pollution Control Board, and proper treatment of both plastic and general waste.

A unique highlight of the centre’s commitment to environmental protection is the tree that stands tall inside its fitness centre.
Shoranur Municipality in Palakkad district has become the first in Kerala to be declared free of extreme poverty. This was achieved by lifting all 99 families identified in the municipality’s extreme poverty list out of poverty. As part of the effort, houses were built for five homeless families. Four other families, who had no land or house, were given land through the Manasode Ithiri Mannu scheme. Flats will be constructed for them on 25 cents of this land. The municipality also addressed other issues faced by the families on the poverty list through focused and practical solutions.

This achievement comes ahead of the state government’s plan to declare Kerala an extreme poverty-free state on November 1. Shoranur had earlier made news for becoming a waste-free municipality and for achieving 100% digital literacy. It has also won the award for the best municipality in the district.

The state government is running the Extreme Poverty Eradication Project with the goal of completely eliminating extreme poverty. This project aims to fulfil two key Sustainable Development Goals ending poverty and achieving zero hunger.

Under this project, a list of 64,006 extremely poor families, including 1,03,099 individuals, was prepared with help from local bodies and the public. The reasons behind each family's poverty were studied in detail. Based on this, short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans were created and implemented.

As a result, 30,658 families, nearly 48% were freed from extreme poverty in the first phase. By May 23, 2025, a total of 51,417 families, or over 80%, had been lifted out of extreme poverty.Ending extreme poverty is one of Kerala’s major steps towards social development. The success of Shoranur Municipality shows the real impact of this mission. By aiming to become an extreme poverty-free state, Kerala is setting a new model of development focused on people’s well-being and social justice.

It reminds people that a safe pregnancy and the health of the mother and baby are the responsibility of the whole family.

To carry out the project, groups of trained women called ‘Dhatri Brigades’ have been formed. These women are trained for one month to help and support new mothers. A small handbook is also being made with the help of doctors and the Women and Child Development Department. A free kit worth ₹2,500 is given to new mothers. It includes Ayurvedic medicines, as advised by government doctors.

This project also helps women get jobs. Women aged 25 to 40 in the block are given training for self-employment. There are now six ‘Dhatri Brigades’ working, and each member is paid ₹500 per day. In the first year, 34 women got help through the project, and ₹2.5 lakh was spent. In the last four years, 284 women were supported, with a total cost of about ₹12 lakh.
.

This achievement is proof that the Pattanakkad and Muhamma police stations have become exemplary service providers of humanitarian and social welfare activities.

A key feature of their operations is the grievance redressal system, which serves as the primary channel for FIR registration. Complaint investigations are directly monitored at the ASP office, with a target to resolve complaints within 15 days.

In a bid to improve infrastructure, over 400 abandoned items were transferred to the District Police Store, freeing up space within the stations. Additionally, a comprehensive vehicle database for Cherthala Sub-Division has been created, and the auctioning of unclaimed vehicles has commenced. The sub-division has also adopted the "paperless administration" policy, saving 50,000 sheets of paper monthly by submitting case diaries and charge sheets digitally.

To protect the buildings from heavy rainfall and extend their lifespan, truss work, waterproofing, and repainting measures have been carried out. Furthermore, improved facilities for staff, such as dedicated employee spaces, upgraded restrooms, water coolers, and seating for the public, have been added to enhance both the working environment and public interaction.

Cherthala Sub-Division plans to expand these improvements to all police stations, aiming to boost public service delivery and strengthen law and order.

The Health Department has launched the Ashwamedham campaign in Kollam district to find and treat hidden cases of leprosy and work toward eradicating the disease. The campaign aims to raise awareness and clear up misconceptions about leprosy. The campaign runs from January 30 to February 12.

As part of the program, two trained health workers will visit every house in the district to check for skin symptoms. If any signs of leprosy are found, the person will be referred to a hospital for free diagnosis and treatment. Health workers and volunteers have been specially trained for these visits. The campaign will also monitor infection rates and disabilities among children.

Leprosy symptoms can take 5 to 10 years to appear after the infection begins, making early detection crucial since this is when the disease is most contagious. Fortunately, leprosy is fully curable if treated early.

Symptoms to watch for include pale or red patches on the skin without pain or itching, numbness in the hands or feet, thick and shiny skin, lumps, painless sores, or deformities. The disease usually affects people with weak immune systems.

The campaign involves multiple departments and will include targeted efforts in tribal areas, places where migrant workers live, and local schools. Special awareness drives will also be organised by local bodies and schools to educate students.
