Elavalli Gram Panchayat Develops Innovative Diaper Recycling Machine.
Elavalli Gramapanchayat has designed its machine to recycle diapers. The panchayat has prepared a green incinerator to burn diapers and sanitary napkins used by bed patients and children. This is an incinerator with a system that removes dust particles and gases that are harmful to nature while burning diapers. The incinerator is being manufactured by 4R Technologies, a company started in Puzhyakal Industrial Park. The trial run of the installation in Thrissur Elavalli Panchayat was successful. With this, Elavalli is becoming one of the first gram panchayats in the state to introduce a system of scientifically treating diapers. In the said incinerator, the diapers deposited in the first chamber are burnt in automatic industrial burners at 850 degrees centigrade. The operating temperature is set at 850 degrees centigrade in the first burner and 1050 degrees centigrade in the second chamber. LPG is the fuel. No toxic gases such as carbon monoxide are produced due to high combustion. The incinerator is designed in a way that it can recycle water. The chimney is made of stainless steel at a height of 100 feet. The smoke emitted will be white in color, which is not harmful to nature. The cost of the plant is estimated at Rs 30 lakh. The plant, which uses two kg of LPG per hour, can burn 60 diapers in 45 minutes. The panchayat aims to collect diapers ward-wise by electric auto by preparing a list of consumers. The inadequacy of diaper disposal systems is a very acute problem in Kerala. Municipalities are coordinating this activity with private entrepreneurs, including in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. Municipalities have drawn up plans to set up the facility either on their own or in collaboration with private entrepreneurs, and many have already been completed and are operational. The government hopes that the gram panchayats belonging to the clusters close to the cities will soon be able to use this facility to dispose of diapers..
