Under the Haritha Keralam Mission, Paniyeli Poru, located in the Vengoor Panchayat of the Malayatoor Forest Division, is poised to become Ernakulam district's inaugural model green tourism center. This initiative seeks to establish a "green code of conduct" for sustainable tourism practices. The name "Paniyeli Poru" originates from the sound produced when the flowing Periyar River strikes the rock formations. Visitors can access the site by vehicle up to a wooden arch, beyond which they must purchase a pass and continue on foot along designated trails to explore the scenic beauty. The entry is open from 8 am to 5 pm. The primary attraction at Paniyeli Poru is the Periyar River, which flows through the forest. Visitors can enjoy walking along forest trails and admiring the river. A footpath near the river, approximately 300 meters from the main gate, has been constructed for a more enjoyable walking experience. To transform Paniyeli Poru into a green tourism center, several eco-friendly measures are being implemented. These include effective waste management, a ban on single-use products, sustainable alternatives, improved sanitation and liquid waste management systems, and the installation of MCFs, mini MCFs, bottle booths, and security cameras. A Mega Clean Drive was conducted under the leadership of Vengoor Gram Panchayat in collaboration with the Haritha Keralam Mission, Forest Department, Forest Protection Committee, and Rajagiri Vishwajyoti College. These initiatives aim to ensure that Paniyeli Poru remains a sustainable and environmentally friendly tourist destination for years to come.
