In a significant achievement for healthcare in the state, Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has successfully conducted its first mechanical thrombectomy within the Department of Interventional Neurology. This novel procedure was carried out on a patient suffering from a stroke. Thrombectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove blood clots from arteries or veins, helping to restore blood flow to vital organs such as the legs, arms, intestines, kidneys, and brain. This marks the first instance of mechanical thrombectomy being performed independently within a government medical college. While this treatment is typically expensive, the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has now made it accessible.Recently developed as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the Department of Neurology is now equipped with advanced treatment systems to improve stroke care.
