The Harita Keralam Mission has successfully established its 101st Biodiversity Pachathuruthu in the Kilimanoor Block Panchayat. This Pachathuruthu was developed on land owned by the Sri Shankara Trust in Nagaroor Gram Panchayat as part of the mission's broader initiative to restore the natural environment. Constructed on a two-acre plot under the Nagaroor Sreesankara Trust, this project was completed with the cooperation of the Employment Guarantee Project. The Harita Keralam Mission sourced 500 seedlings from the Botanical Garden and procured an additional 500 seedlings locally. Various plants were strategically placed across different areas; a medicinal garden was created in front of Sreesankara Vidyapeetam College, fruit trees were planted on the east side near the school, and short fruit trees were placed on the south side. Additionally, trees that aid in protecting the sacred groves (kavu) were planted near the temple, along with other plants beneficial for the temple environment, extending from the temple pond to the premises.Pachathuruthu plays a vital role in mitigating climate change's and global warming's adverse effects by acting as carbon sinks that absorb and store excess carbon dioxide. These green spaces are also crucial for conserving local biodiversity.Within the Kilimanoor Block Panchayat, there are 100 other Pachathuruthu distributed across various Panchayats: 46 in Karavaram, 14 in Nagaroor, 10 in Navaikkulam, nine in Pulimathu, nine in Kilimanoor, six in Pallikal, four in Madavoor, and two in Pazhaya Kunnummal. These efforts reflect the mission’s commitment to environmental sustainability across the region.
