Government College Manimalakunnu becomes Ernakulam's first government green campus
TM Jacob Memorial Government College Manimalakunnu has become the first government green campus in Ernakulam district, as part of the Malinya Muktham Navakeralam People's Campaign. The college received this honor after attaining an A Plus rating in the grading conducted by the Haritha Kerala Mission, which assessed various factors such as waste management, biodiversity, agriculture, energy conservation, water safety, and green protocols.Under the leadership of the National Service Scheme (NSS), the college has implemented several biodiversity initiatives and is committed to maintaining a green campus. A biogas plant has been established to treat organic waste generated from the canteen, with the biogas being utilized for cooking for two hours each day. Additionally, the college's office is fully powered by solar panels.
To promote effective waste management, the college has installed waste management boards in common areas and designated bins for the disposal of plastic, paper, and organic waste throughout the classrooms. The college community has also organized a mega cleaning drive and green talks to raise awareness.As part of Kerala's initiative to become a waste-free state by March 30, 2025, the public campaign was launched with the dedication of the green campus. This accomplishment was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Thirumaradi Gram Panchayat, Haritha Kerala Mission, and the NSS unit of TM Jacob Memorial Government College Manimalakunnu.
