The City Gas project, aimed at supplying cooking gas through pipelines, has been launched in the Vattiyoorkau constituency with a budget of ₹120 crores. Managed by AG&P Pratham Company, the project will be completed in three phases, starting with ten wards in the first phase. In the initial phase, the project will serve areas including Medical College, Pattam, Muttada, Kuravankonam, Kesavadasapuram, Kavadiyar, Perurkada, Nandankodu, Nalanchira, and Shastamangalam. The gas will be supplied from the company's Kochuveli plant, with 60 km of pipelines already laid. The first phase will provide 12,000 connections.Beneficiaries switching from traditional cooking gas cylinders to the city gas scheme can expect 10% to 20% in financial savings. Payments will be based on meter readings, with a charge of ₹50 per unit. The project adheres to international safety standards, with pipeline gas pressure much lower than that of cooking gas cylinders, thereby reducing the risk of accidents. The City Gas scheme will supply piped natural gas (PNG) for kitchens and compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles, potentially reducing fuel costs by 25%. Additionally, with the implementation of the GAIL gas pipeline project, natural gas will become available to both small and large-scale industries across the state. A key benefit of the scheme is the provision of domestic fuel at a 30% lower cost compared to traditional sources.
