As part of the Modernisation of Food Streets Project, a Food Street Hub is being established at Shankhumukham, Thiruvananthapuram, under the leadership of the Food Safety Department. The initiative aims to make Kerala a leading food destination while ensuring the availability of safe and hygienic food. The modern food streets are designed to offer quality food to the public in a clean, attractive environment.

The Thiruvananthapuram Food Street has been developed at a cost of ₹1 crore. By providing safe and healthy food, these modern food streets will boost local employment, promote food tourism, and strengthen the overall tourism sector. The project in Thiruvananthapuram is being implemented in collaboration with DTPC, NHM, and the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

Eighteen permanent food stalls have been set up with essential facilities including a common dining area, waste management system, washing area, and toilets. All stalls will operate in compliance with food safety standards. The Food Street will serve both the local public and tourists visiting Shankhumukham, allowing them to enjoy a variety of delicacies in a safe and pleasant setting. The initiative also adds a new dimension to Thiruvananthapuram’s street food culture and nightlife.

The Modernisation of Food Streets Project focuses on ensuring the safety and hygiene of food sold in street outlets. It aims to enhance the efficiency of existing food streets, reduce food-borne diseases, improve public health, and create more employment opportunities. The project also promotes Kerala’s unique culinary identity by developing food-based tourist destinations.

In the first phase, four locations have been selected for implementation - Shankhumukham in Thiruvananthapuram, Kasthurba Nagar in Ernakulam, Kozhikode Beach, and Kottakkunnu in Malappuram. The project also envisions expanding food streets to more locations across the state.
